Curriculum and
Reporting Overview
Moorooduc Primary
School is delighted to announce that we’ve taken on the Victorian
Government’s initiative, VELS (Victorian Essential Learning
Standards P-10) and the new reporting format (Quick Vic Reporting).
The Standards are
designed to engage students, build their confidence, offer varied
approaches to learning and challenge them to achieve. VELS links
traditional subject areas more closely to other important areas of
learning such as the development of physical, personal and social
skills and the ability to apply knowledge in workplace situations
and future learning. Although the students’ learning is based on
VELS, our curriculum reflects the Moorooduc School’s community
beliefs and has an Inquiry focus.
The Victorian
Government’s new, more parent friendly reporting system is based on
VELS and is designed to show the student’s achievements (on a
five-point scale of A to E), areas for improvement and the direction
of future learning. It also gives an indication of what the school
will do to achieve these goals and ways that the parents can help to
support the child’s learning. ‘C’ indicates that students are on
track and at the expected level of achievement for the time of
year. ‘A’ indicates that students are well above the expected level
of achievement for the time of year.
To give parents an
even clearer picture of where their child’s learning is at, we’ve
prepared learning portfolios and now have a shared oral report that
is lead by the student themselves. These portfolios make a fabulous
keepsake and include pictures and samples of the child’s work. At
least two formal written and two oral reports are given each year.
Moorooduc believes
that children’s learning is at its optimum when school and parents
work hand in hand. At the beginning of each year we hold our
‘Welcome to Moorooduc’ barbecue where teachers, parents and students
can share an informal evening together. This is followed by another
opportunity for teachers and parents to meet at the “Getting to Know
Your Child” time where more poignant information may be shared.
Parents are also encouraged to be actively involved in other areas
such as classrooms, the P.A. (Parents Association) or School
Council.

MOOROODUC PRIMARY SCHOOL ACHIEVES THE ACCREDITATION STANDARD FOR
PERFORMANCE AND DEVELOPMENT CULTURE IN SCHOOLS
Moorooduc Primary School is now one
of only 173 out of a total of 1600 Victorian government schoolsacross the state to receive accreditation as a Performance and
Development Culture school. Ms.Preston and Mrs. Cahill
attended a presentation ceremony on Thursday, 12th October, in Carlton where Lynne Kosky, MP, Minister for Education
and Training, presentedthis prestigious award.
“One of the key strategies in our Blueprint for Government Schools is enhancing the effectiveness
of teachers so that we can continue to provide students with the
best possible education,” Ms Kosky said.
“The Performance and Development
Culture initiative, which began in 2005, will enhance the quality of
teaching and contribute to better learning outcomes for students.”
Ms Kosky said teachers had a vital
role to play in creating and sustaining a culture of continuous
improvement.
Schools that meet the performance and
development culture accreditation standards must have:
-
induction programs for new
teachers
-
feedback to individual teachers
on their effectiveness
-
customised plans for teachers’
professional training
It is expected that all schools will
be accredited by 2008.
