Science

Science is undertaken as a specialist area at Moorooduc
Primary School. Each class attends Science for 1 hour every week.
The children are encouraged to question, investigate and report on
their ideas or findings. In accordance with VELS the area of Science requires the children explore the Biological, Chemical, Physical and Earth and Beyond.
The children view themselves as scientists and take on investigative tasks with confidence and curiosity. They are actively involved in performing and assessing experiments, recording and analysing results. They develop skills in predicting outcomes, presenting their findings using scientific terms, answering questions about their discoveries, and applying their scientific understandings to future experiments or other situations.
The children's enthusiasm for this subject spills over into the classrooms with the children looking at the scientific aspects in other activities such as cooking. They see science in their playground environment with the school's chickens,
Interactive garden, vegetable patches and participating in programs such as Sustainable Schools or Science In Schools. Each year a special community event is held. We have had a Family Science night and a Science Expo.
In 2005 the Moorooduc Grand Prix was the featured event, where families were required to make a non-motorised vehicle. The evening was fun and well attended with the winner receiving the Inaugural Grand Prix trophy. Learning about animals is an integral part of Science. Over the years we have had a variety of animals to care for.
Last year a blue tongue lizard enclosure was installed with great excitement and interest from the children.
We also have a green tree frog and two axolotls in the Science Room.
In classrooms teachers keep birds, guinea pigs and fish.
