SOSE/INTEGRATED STUDIES
At Moorooduc, Studies of Society and Environment (S.O.S.E) incorporates areas such as history, geography, health and well-being, science, technology and the Arts. It highlights the importance of democracy, social justice and creating a sustainable environment. Children develop an appreciation of their own and other countries.
Exciting, relevant units of study are based on an inquiry/problem solving approach, where children are immersed in a topic for several weeks after which they complete individual investigations, using a range of research strategies and then present their works to colleagues. They become self-directed learners and engaged problem solvers, pursuing meaning and understanding.
The S.O.S.E. component is enhanced through the use of computers, excursions, guest speakers, whole school activity days, incursions such as the Life Education Van and an exciting Camps Program. This year saw the Level 4 students
travelling to our nation's capital, Canberra.
Moorooduc has recently introduced the acclaimed You Can Do It program, which promotes the development of positive relationships by focusing on four key areas: persistence, organisation, resilience and confidence. As a Sun Smart school, children are required to wear wide-brimmed hats during Terms 1 and 4, encouraged to use 30+ sunblock and wear sunglasses. Our Swimming Program involves not only correct swim stroke techniques but water safety in varied local settings.
At the beginning of each school year School Captains are elected by the Grade 5/6 children and teachers. Interested students need to be nominated by their peers before addressing both staff and students. They outline their ability to fulfil the School Captain's role. At meetings of the Student Representative Council, which includes two elected children from each classroom, discussions centre around fundraising for charities and improvement to the school's grounds or programs.

As an environmentally friendly, Waste Wise School we teach the three R's i.e. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and we encourage the children to take pleasure from nature by keeping a small flock of Pekin chickens, maintaining a vegetable patch and caring for the gardens.
